Brainerd, David

Brainerd, David
(1718–47)
   Missionary.
Brainerd was born in Connecticut in the American colonies and he had a conversion experience at the age of eleven. Educated at Yale, he was expelled, according to his friend Jonathan edwards, as a result of his ‘intemperate and indiscreet zeal’. Subsequently he was taken on as a missionary by the Scottish Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge. During his short life, he was tireless in his efforts to convert the native American inhabitants of Pennsylvania to Christianity and he enjoyed some success. He is remembered for his journal which, published posthumously, has proved an inspiration to many later missionaries.
